The expression "Number 8" refers to the player's number "No. 8" and that's how it's usually abbreviated.

The player holding this position is a tower of strength for the team both physically and mentally. So, as you can guess, it's not a position just for anyone.

The average size of a world-class No. 8 is around 190cm tall and 110kg. Position-wise, the role of a No. 8 to receive the ball from the BK (backs) and carry it over the opposition's defense line. But that's not all! The modern-day No. 8 also needs excellent passing and judgement skills to keep the game going.

In Japan, there are not too many Japanese players who fit this size, so even in the Brave Blossoms team, the No. 8 position is usually fulfilled by a player of foreign descent.
